A blog post on how to overcome writer's block If you've ever been afflicted with writer's block, you'll know it's no laughing matter — it can impede your writing for days, weeks, or even months. While the problem often goes away of its own volition (or is at least alleviated), writer's block is one of those pests that requires active extermination. In a little over a decade, a good number of tips and tricks have been shared in print and online on how to get writing when you're frozen. I've pared down the top twenty ways to overcome writer's block into a list of six strategies that will help kick your muse into gear without having to hunt down obscure sources on the Internet. 1. Find the root of your writer's block by writing about what blocks you For me, at least, figuring out what triggers writer's block is often more difficult than getting past the obstacle itself. To find out what we're missing, we need to actually write about that which we're missing. I wrote for a moment about how the lack of sleep is the culprit. I needed to sleep, but I didn't want to unless it was in a bed … at home. I also felt that if I could not embark upon this novel until then, then there would be no story to tell. As for solutions, at one point it seemed as though my best path would be through the pillows rather than the computer. I knew that I had to sleep once more in my own bed, preferably with my wife by my side. This would mean getting up at 4:30 am. I knew that if I could do this for two or three days, then it would make the transition back to writing easier. 2. Change your environment I listened to "Bad Company" by The Firm on repeat while writing the first chapter of my novel . It was a good song for a while, until it started to feel like a kick in the head. Even though it felt a little bit like a struggle at first , I knew what I had to do: find other instruments and melodies outside of this one track . Even though you might not have access to a new environment, there are some things you can do to change your environment for the better, both inside and outside of the house. A few of these tips include: Find music that makes you feel good. If you're an indie band, try finding some tunes that are more pop rock or cinema soundtracks. For me , it was good to find a radio station with no commercials. It helps if they play rock-sounding songs . I'm not sure if there's something psychological about this, but if my ears start hearing an instrumental song after 10 minutes, they usually end up bringing my attention back to the dreaded words on my page. cfa1e77820
